Dirty Dozen: Levi Cuss

The raw honesty typical in Levi Cuss’ roots/blues music speaks to a life of redemption; from troubles with the law, addiction, incredible sadness and loss, to love, strength and perseverance. After the release of his debut album, “It’s War” in 2013, Cuss has been touring throughout Western Canada and has had the privilege to attend two artist residencies at Banff Centre where his exposure to talented musicians from various genres have helped Cuss hone his craft. Upon completion of his first residency, Cuss headed south to Nashville Tennessee to record his second album, “Night Thief”, which quickly garnered attention in the roots/blue scene.

Can you tell us about yourself? Where you’re from and what you’ve been up to over the past few years? I have been writing a ton, recording a bit, touring lots, I have done two artist residency’s at the Banff arts centre. I am based out of Red Deer Alberta, have been touring the E.U. for last two months!!

How would you describe your music? The dark dirty truth! With a side of roots!

Can you tell us a little bit about your influences? Love Jason Isbell, and love to watch how he has taken off the last 3 years! Townes Van Zandt, well what can I say about him? Just so pure to the crazy music business game, when he was alive. Sturgill Simpson, just a lot of fun to watch!!

What are you currently promoting? I am currently promoting a full-length release called “Night Thief”

Have you got a particular song you’ve done that you’re particularly proud of, one that might define you?  “Cut My Teeth” is about struggling through the machine while still sticking to who you are.

What are you currently listening to? Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Bill Withers, Cody Jinks, Fred Eaglesmith

And your favourite album of all time, the one you couldn’t do without? Jason Isbell, South Eastern, I have been listening to it for about two years straight.

What are your hopes for your future career? Man I am just trying to make a livin’, lovin’ what I do!

If money were no object what would be your dream project? Make a record with Rick Rubin!

What’s the best thing about being a musician? Being able to express myself on my own terms! The rush of performing! Spilling my soul out into the music!

And the worst? Never being able to keep a lady happy! Being broke!!

Finally, have you anything you’d like to say to the readers of Americana UK? Well I hope you guys all dig the record! Come out and see a live performance!!
