Dirty Dozen: The Young Fables

The Young Fables, 2016Laurel Wright and Wesley Lunsford are a country/ americana duo based out of Nashville, TN. They released their debut album “TWO” in February.

Can you tell us about yourself? Where you’re from and what you’ve been up to over the past few years?

We are both, originally, from East TN. We have lived in Nashville for two years now playing out and writing as much as we can.

How would you describe your music?
The songs that we write together are about things that we’ve been through together and separately. We think it’s super important to have songs that others can easily relate to.

Can you tell us a little bit about your influences?
Wesley: Specifically in country music, just to name a few, are Jerry Reed, Roy Nichols and Glen Campbell. I love all types of music and Bill Frisell is one of my favorite guitar players of all time.

Laurel: I grew up singing Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline and I still love to sing all the old stuff like that today. I also love Kacey Musgraves and Sarah Siskind.

What are you currently promoting?
We are currently promoting our album “TWO” with eleven of our original songs on the record. We wrote two of the songs with Laurel’s mamaw and one song with her papaw. (That’s East TN for grandma and grandpa) 😉

Have you got a particular song you’ve done that you’re particularly proud of, one that might define you?
Our single, “TWO”, is about Laurel going from a solo artist to a duo with Wesley and becoming The Young Fables. We are very proud of that song and our music video for it, as well.

What are you currently listening to?
Wesley: I always have a bag of old records in my car and it’s very rare that I listen to just one thing.

Laurel: Wes and I are always together and he is always introducing me to new music. We are in the car A LOT and we always play old records.

And your favourite album of all time, the one you couldn’t do without?
Wesley: Waylon Jennings “Honky Tonk Heroes” because Waylon and Billy Joe together is the greatest combination.

Laurel: Sarah Siskind “In The Mountains”. It’s a record she recorded at her home in North Carolina and every song is just her and her acoustic. It’s truly beautiful.

What are your hopes for your future career?
We play out a lot and feel like we work really hard and all we really want is to make a good living playing music together.

If money were no object what would be your dream project?
Wesley: I would build a time machine to go back and see Hank Thompson perform and then I would go to the future and do it just like they did it in “Back To The Future 2”, find out who wins the World Series and place bets. I know it’s not music related but wouldn’t it be sweet?

Laurel: After hearing all Wesley’s answers for this I’d go solo again. HA! Kidding 🙂

What’s the best thing about being a musician?
Wesley: The best part of being a musician is I feel like I made the right decision by not going to prom and playing my guitar instead.

Laurel: The best part of being a musician is having an outlet when things are both good and bad.

And the worst?
Wesley: I didn’t get to go to prom 🙁

Laurel: Being worried about my voice all the time.

Finally, have you anything you’d like to say to the readers of Americana UK?

We are so grateful for all of the support you have given us and we want to meet each and every one of you someday.
