Gate to Southwell roots festival announces 2017 line-up

The eleventh Gate To Southwell Festival has announced its line-up and it’s looking pretty ace. Running from Thursday June 8th to Sunday June 11th in rural Nottinghamshire, the festival headliners include the lovely Kate Rusby, and Jon Boden, frontman of Bellowhead (RIP). There’s also an array of international performers including BOC from Mallorca plus Canadian bands Le Vent Du Nord and The East Pointers.  Americana fans will be well served by appearances from two of Norfolk’s Alden, Patterson and Dashwood, and The Vagaband, along with Edinburgh’s Wayward Jane and London’s Dana Immanuel and the Stolen Band. The newest addition to the line-up is The Life and Times of the Brothers Hogg , recent recipient of a 9/10 review from ourselves for their album “Celestial Emporium”

There’s also the legendary harmony supergroup Daphne’s Flight (first formed at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 1995) who are reuniting to appear at Southwell, and the Thursday night bill will feature Blazin’ Fiddles from Scotland and The Changing Room, a modern folk collaboration between Sam Kelly and Tanya Brittain. Spoken word events will feature punk poet Attila the Stockbroker (if you’ve never seen Attila, you are missing out on one of life’s great delights) and festival favourite Les Barker. There’ll also be welcome returns for much-loved artists such as the Californian ukulele-toting Ooks Of Hazzard (their cover of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ was one of the highlights of 2016), the Glaswegian Americana of James Edwyn & The Borrowed

There’ll also be welcome returns for much-loved artists such as the Californian ukulele-toting Ooks Of Hazzard (their cover of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ was one of the highlights of 2016), the Glaswegian Americana of James Edwyn & The Borrowed Bandand, and the folk roots cerebral singer-songwriting of Jess Morgan. Plus you can apparently join in the warm atmosphere on Saturday by wearing flowers in your hair to celebrate 50 years since 1967’s summer of love. Or join Sunday’s spoken word extravaganza by entering The Southwell Slam – an open poetry and spoken word competition.

Tickets are available now from the festival website.
