Allison Russell “You’re Not Alone” – featuring Brandi Carlile

You know it’s a real pleasure to say that today’s song needs no introduction – since we all know and appreciate the talent of Allison Russell.  A pleasure because after years of banging on about Birds of Chicago and how great Allison Russell and JT Nero are – and yet still catching them in small venues – at last the broader recognition has arrived.  Is it terribly gauche if we say “about time too“?  If it is, then here’s to being gauche.

You’re Not Alone‘ was originally part of the debut Our Native Daughters album, way back in 2019.  Here it is with Brandi Carlile adding vocals and Larissa Maestro & SistaStrings ( Monique & Chauntee Ross) adding…the strings.  A gorgeous and meaningful song made, if anything, even more gorgeous.

Full credits for the song are: Allison Russell: banjo, vocals Brandi Carlile: vocals Chauntee Ross: violin, vocals Larissa Maestro: cello, vocals Megan Coleman: drums & percussion Megan McCormick: electric guitar, vocals Monique Ross: cello, vocals.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
