Broken Forest “Spirit Of The Meadows” – the skylarks ascending

Perhaps the most attention-grabbing part of the backstory for Broken Forest, and in particular today’s song ‘Spirit of the Meadows‘, is that this most perfect sounding piece of modern British Folk is the work of Luise London who was born in Leipzig, and moved to England to study music at the Institute for Contemporary Music Performance.   It obviously paid off.

Spirit of the Meadows‘ came out of a week that Luise spent writing in the wilderness at the Knoydart Songwriting Retreat, Scotland in 2021 where she was fascinated by the little skylarks flying and singing across Scotland’s meadows, jumping up out of nowhere when someone passed by.  It’s taken from the new EP ‘Wild at Heart‘ which was released at the end of July.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
