Classic Clips: Ron Sexsmith sings “Secret Heart” on BBC Four’s Songwriters’ Circle, 2011

Taken from Series 2 of BBC Four’s Songwriters’ Circle, this clip of Ron Sexsmith catches him on great form. Here he sings one of his better-known songs ‘Secret Heart’, whilst fellow guests Fran Healy and Graham Gouldman look on seemingly spellbound. The widely revered Canadian songwriter (Elvis Costello is a big fan), first came to wide attention with the 1995 release of his self-titled album on which ‘Secret Heart’ is the opening track. Since then, he has released a further fourteen remarkably consistent albums without ever achieving the level of commercial recognition that he deserves.

Amongst those also appearing on the programme over its duration were Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, Nick Lowe, Leon Russell, Michael Chapman, Joe Ely, Loudon Wainwright, Richard Thompson, John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, Dan Penn and many more – so definitely worth a trawl around YouTube. This one though, you don’t have to look for because we’re bringing it right to you.
