Clint’s Classic Clips: Mazzy Star “Fade Into You” live in California, 1994.

Captured live in 1994 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, Mazzy Star produce a quite stunning performance of the band’s most celebrated song.

With so much footage to choose from, selecting clips for this column was always going to be a tough call. Reading Guy Lincoln’s wonderful ‘Top 10 Paisley Underground albums’ feature for AUK last week led me, not directly, but by a more circuitous route, to this clip. Mazzy Star were born out of the Paisley Underground scene. David Roback, along with his brother Steven, were founder members of The Rain Parade. David left the Rain Parade after just one album and formed a new band with ex-Dream Syndicate bassist Kendra Smith. After a name change that band became Opal and released their album ‘Happy Nightmare Baby’ in 1987. Kendra Smith then quit the band and was replaced by Hope Sandoval. Later the band changed their name once more to Mazzy Star. Their debut album ‘She Hangs Brightly’ was released in 1990 on Rough Trade. The band then signed to Capitol Records for whom they released ‘So Tonight That I Might See’ in 1993. A year later the single ‘Fade Into You’ from that album became a big hit. The performance of the song comes from October 1994 at the peak of the song’s chart success.

From buying my first record aged 10 and attending my first gig at 14, music has been a lifelong obsession. My idea of a perfect day would be a new record arriving in the post in the morning, watching Ipswich Town win in the afternoon followed by a gig and a pint with my mates at night,
