Derek Senn “Texas Legislators” – hey man, what’s going on?

We shouldn’t be featuring this song today.  Derek Senn has a new album out ‘The Big Five-O‘ which features songs in his solidly rocking style that for the most part carry a message and are delivered with a humorous twist.  As you can see, we liked 2019’s ‘How Could A Man‘ and 2016’s ‘Avuncular‘.  This latest release features a song called ‘Big In Britain‘ and you know that’s quite likely the song we’d have been directed towards by Derek Senn.  For obvious reasons.  It’s a funny song about being more popular in Britain than in America although there’s a bit of a sting in the tail of that tale.  It’s ironic and fun, and we’d have had some ironic and fun time with it, and everyone would have been happy.

But that didn’t happen.  Instead, though, we get this.  Which, I’m sure Derek Senn would agree with us, is a song that should never have needed to have been written.  Yet, here we are.  And we agree with Derek that all things considered this should be focus song right now.  Because…as the song says: “Texas legislators white christian men / get voted into office and pass legislation“, going on to add “dudes get to legislate what you the woman can and can’t do.”  So, you know what large subject we’re talking about now, right?

Derek Senn makes his point of view very clear with a hard hitter of a song that addresses the Texas SB8 legislation specifically but naturally also encapsulates the wider constitutional changes and the likely outcomes therefrom.  There’s swearing, and sometimes we jocularly warn you off dear reader, but not this time – because if you can’t take a few swear words then you shouldn’t be able to take successive legislation which removes a woman’s rights over her own body and her reproduction – or otherwise – choices.  What’s next?  And we know what’s next, because Clarence Thomas has told us: “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.

Welcome to Gilead, enjoy your stay.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
