Dirty Dozen: Jack Ellis

jack-ellis-2016Jack Ellis, Singer/musician and song writer, has ambition and intends to keep the continuum of great music coming out of  South Wales.

Can you tell us about yourself? Where you are from and what you’ve been up to over the past few years?

I was born and live on the coast in South Wales, a beautiful part of this great country. My past years have been experimenting and looking for what i want to achieve with my music. I have played in a couple of bands but over the past eighteen months decided to concentrate on a solo career. It has its pro’s and con’s but ultimately gives me control of expressing myself through my music. How would you describe your music?

I would like to think my music as a songwriter is quite story telling. The good the bad the truth is put too melody and composition. I put my feelings into words that people can relate to. I think I sit on the barrier between alternative rock to ambient acoustic music. It holds uniqueness in its dynamics and song structures. Its real music with a real story, real life experiences that have happened through out my life. I take inspiration from artist like Jeff Buckley, Ben Howard, Asaf Avidan and hundreds of more “real” songwriters.

Can you tell us a little bit about your influences?

I can remember being brainwashed by Mum and Dad as far as I can remember by artists such as Kate Bush, Beautiful South, R.E.M ringing through out our house……not a bad choice of artists if I do say so……but I am naming the good ones!!

What are you currently promoting?

Recently this year i put out the track ‘The Storm’ which was song about How love does not always turn out the way we plan. My new track ‘Disdained’ which is due to be released on the 23rd Sept (free listen available on my soundcloud ‘jackellismusuc’) continues the story from ‘The Storm’. Both form part of my  up and coming E.P ‘Eternal’ which is due out early next year. There are two videos that build into one story that accompany both ‘The Storm’ and ‘Disdained’ that i am particularly proud of and that are viewable on youtube.

Have you got a particular song you’ve done that you’re particularly proud of, one that might define you?

If i finish a song and in my head it is complete then i am proud of it, my own personal standards will not allow me to put something out there that i am not wholly  satisfied with, however my track ‘Pocket of Lint’  holds a special significance as it was aired on radio two by Dermot O’Leary and started to get me some recognition of my music.

What are your hopes for your future career?

Like many artists i would love someone or some record company to come along and give me some money. Not to make me wealthy, but to enable me to carry on doing what i love which is writing, and performing.

If money were no object what would be your dream project?

If money was no object i would continue to do what i am doing now and that is writing tracks and eventually albums and performing in front of audiences. The only difference would be not having to worry about paying for my next studio session, my broken guitar, getting to my next gig or paying the rent !!!   ….maybe a tour as support with Ben Howard would be high in the ‘cool’ department as well

What’s the best thing about being a musician?

I know I will never write music that everyone will enjoy, however just the fact that someone listens to your work, maybe they leave a message through social media or come along after a gig and tell you how much they have enjoyed your work gives a warm glow. The amount of work that can go into putting a track together or rehearsing a gig and the fact that someone appreciates that is a good feeling………..
