Dirty Dozen: Jonathan Terrell

Austin, Texas based singer/ songwriter, Jonathan Terrell is a new breed of country.  Gathering inspiration from the gritty corners of Americana, Terrell has bloomed into a well-respected songwriter of deeply moving and resonant country-folk music explorations. Can you tell us about yourself? Where you’re from and what you’ve been up to over the past few years?
Hey, yeah.  I grew up in a small town in North East Texas called Longview that sits in the pine curtain near the Louisiana border. I’ve been in Austin now for about 11 years and I spend a lot of time touring the states and a little in Europe.

How would you describe your music?
Americana, country, folk.  That’s a hard one.  They all bleed into each other.

Can you tell us a little bit about your influences?
A good song is a good song.  Everything from Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen to Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt and Dwight Yoakam.  I love the classics!!

What are you currently promoting?
My new EP, Color Me Lucky

Have you got a particular song you’ve done that you’re particularly proud of, one that might define you?
Color Me lucky.  it’s a desert cruiser.  It hold a lot of space and emotion.  It feels timeless and effortless.

What are you currently listening to?
The New Nikki Lane album, Highway Queen. The Kills, Ice and Ash, The last Iggy Pop record he did with QOTSA , new Ryan Adams album, Prisoner and lot’s of Dwight.  I’m playing a Dwight tribute here in Austin this friday so I’ve been jamming the set list on repeat.

And your favourite album of all time, the one you couldn’t do without?
Not a fair question. Maybe Tom Petty Full Moon Fever just because of the sentiments attached or maybe Roy Orbison, Mystery Girl.  That album is close to perfect.

What are your hopes for your future career?
I’m a musician.  That’s as hopeful as you can get.

If money were no object what would be your dream project?
Taking a year to record an album

What’s the best thing about being a musician?
The freedom and release of creating something that only lives for a moment.

And the worst?
Being away from the ones you love.

Finally, have you anything you’d like to say to the readers of Americana UK?
Go see live music and thank you for being on the listening end for dreamers like me.
