Dirty Dozen: Steve Black

Steve Black, 2016Westcountry Americana songwriter Steve Black, know for his work alongside Alan West is a terrific singer/songwriter in his own right and his blend of easy, Laural Canyon style country music on “Right Here and Now” on NEO Music is a marvel.

Can you tell us about yourself? Where you’re from and what you’ve been up to over the past few years?
I live in Devon and have done for 30 years. Along with Alan West we have been on a perpetual tour for the last 10 years gigging and recording our music.

How would you describe your music?
If pushed I would describe my music as a blend of country/folk/rock with a hint of the theatrical!

Can you tell us a little bit about your influences?
I don’t have any really. I try not to be influenced by anyone.

What are you currently promoting?
My new CD “Right Here and Now” 10 new original songs recorded in Lyme Regis Dorset and Nashville.

Have you got a particular song you’ve done that you’re particularly proud of, one that might define you?
I try not to write too many songs in the first person I prefer telling stories on other people’s behalf! My favourite personal song is the title track of the new CD and of all the songs I’ve written I’d have to say “The Way of the World” is one I’m very proud of.

What are you currently listening to?
A new EP from my mate Adam Sweet. He’s a great guitarist/singer/songwriter in the Americana/Blues field. I love it.

And your favourite album of all time, the one you couldn’t do without?
“Music from Big Pink” – The Band

What are your hopes for your future career?
To continue enjoying writing, performing and recording and do whatever I can to help promote the music.

If money were no object what would be your dream project?
To set up a business and building dedicated to help young UK songwriters, performers and musicians learn their trade and enhance their abilities via workshops, seminars, recording and performing.

What’s the best thing about being a musician?
The feeling you get when the music is “hot” and when the audience “get” what you’re saying!

And the worst?
Turning up to a venue and there’s no kettle! People talking while others are trying to listen!

Finally, have you anything you’d like to say to the readers of Americana UK?
I believe we have some fantastic writers, performers and musicians in the UK who deserve a stage to be heard! It’s all out there! Go and find it, support it and it will continue to move forward.
