Exclusive AUK Mini-Gig: Danny Schmidt

Life in lockdown has been strange and challenging in all sorts of ways.  For music lovers and musicians, the absence of live shows has been particularly hard.  We have been publishing regular mini-gigs to sustain that connection and today’s instalment comes from the Texan singer-songwriter, Danny Schmidt. Since his 1999 debut album, ‘Live at the Prism Coffee House’, Schmidt has been prolific. His tenth studio album, ‘Standard Deviation’, was released last year to critical acclaim.

Schmidt is known for his gentle folk delivery and for the quality of his lyricism. His words are like poetry and he captures universal themes with a rare insight and compassion. Often, Schmidt performs with his wife, Carrie Elkin, also an acclaimed solo artist. Their harmonies are sublime and their duo shows come highly recommended. 2014’s ‘For Keeps’, was a collaboration that involved them interpreting one another’s songs to great effect.

For today’s mini-gig, Danny Schmidt plays three songs, providing almost twenty minutes of delightful acoustic music. There are two new songs, written during the quarantine, and his classic tune ‘This Too Shall Pass’, which was written during a very different, more personal, crisis and originally appeared on the 2005 album ‘Parables & Primes’. It’s never felt more relevant.

Enjoy the gig and explore more of Danny Schmidt’s music here.
