Gabi Garbutt & The Illuminations “Never Never” – art for art’s sake

Artists – temperamental beasts, but driven by their muse.  That’s the premise of ‘Never Never‘ the new single from the new album ‘Cockerel’ which was released last week on Trapped Animal Records.  ‘Never Never’ has punk poet Gabi Garbutt drawing inspiration from Van Gogh and Robert Quine, who was guitarist for Lou Reed and Richard Hell.  Garbutt says: “Van Gogh & Robert Quine are both people that I admire artistically and who sadly took their own life, and I had this image of this last blast of sound and colour followed by a deathly silence. It’s an affirmation of their great but troubled life, that was so brilliantly and so painfully wrought into their art, and there’s also despair at the blunt finality of their tragically premature deaths. It’s unhinged brassy punk.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
