Gordie “Crazylegs” MacKeeman “All Around The Kitchen” – fiddle driven folk

Gordie “Crazylegs” MacKeeman has recorded a two volume album release of songs that’s called ‘Folk For Little Folk’. It was a project that came to life over the pandemic when MacKeeman became more acutely aware of how he might entertain his own children. “We spent many long days listening to music, dancing, and creating music,” he recalls.  The Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island) musician adds that the  recording with local PEI musicians was something special “We had all been deprived of live performance, and it was really exciting to play together again. We did have a little bit of help from some friends from afar creating this album. Dom Flemons, of the famed Carolina Chocolate Drops, was able to add his amazing percussion to a few songs.”

And what of ‘All Around The Kitchen‘?  What’s the message hidden within the lyrics: “Put your hands on your hips / Let your right foot slip / Stop right still/  Put your hand on your head / Your other hand on your toe“?  Nothing simpler to explain – this is a set of dance move instructions, to get one moving, like a chicken, all around the…kitchen.   No where else will do – ‘cos it won’t rhyme.  ‘All Around The Kitchen‘ is more than a kid’s song though – there’s some ace playing and the whole vibe taps into a lost folk world of home-spun entertainment that is just a little…weird.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?

Having seen his wonderful live show a couple of times I’ve always felt that his recordings didn’t really capture the same spirit and energy – until now. This track has really whetted my appetite for the album – excellent stuff.
