Track Premiere: Graham Stone Music “Fighting For”

It’s great to have the premiere for this new song by Graham Stone – taken from his new album ‘Bad News‘ which is out on April 12th.  It’s an impassioned roots-rocker that reflects on the turmoil of the world  “when the race is run we put down our guns what we fighting for ?“, whilst also putting it into a generational context “well the first born son of a first born son had a first born son today“.  The world keeps turning, life continues even amongst the madness.Graham Stone comes from a large and musical family -he’s one of seven children. His father often plucked out blues tunes on guitar or bluegrass numbers on the banjo and equipped Graham with an appreciation for instrumentation. “I also think I may have accidentally crushed his banjo by sitting on it as a kid,” he recalls “I still kind of feel bad about that.”  Well – yeah, that’s the right way to feel after committing GBH – that’s Grievous Banjo Harm.  He soon moved onto his grandmother’s guitar – not crushing it, but playing it and the rest is history.

Graham Stone has explained his reasons for writing ‘Fighting For‘ saying “I wrote this song for my son, Rowen, who just turned a year old with the beginning of 2019. It’s an open letter about how I felt on the day he was born, completely overwhelmed with joy and trepidation. I wrote this song to welcome and encourage him while really trying not to sugar coat anything. My hope is that this song will bring courage in the present and hope in the future promise of love and joy and peace. That one day we will beat our swords into ploughshares.  I guess anytime probably feels like a crazy time to welcome another human being into the world but “Fighting For” is my attempt to do just that.  This song is one of the few tunes off this album where I think some of my heavier musical influences bleed through a little bit. Bands like Thrice and Hot Water Music had a huge influence on my songwriting, even more so as Dustin Kensrue and Chuck Ragan both branched off the path for their own solo projects ”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
