Jakob Dylan: “Don’t use technology – Play music together”

Jakob Dylan has got a new film out soon, more details of which below. Ahead of its release he told the Observer in an interview over the weekend that although technology is allowing people to connect in new ways through the current global crisis, that this shouldn’t be the new normal. He elaborated: “It is not required to play with people any more. It has already altered the way people make and record music before the lockdown. They send files to each other, and they are not even in the room when they make a record together. There are a lot of good things about technology, it has made some things much easier, but I think if you want to play music with someone in your neighbourhood, you should go around and play together.”

Jakob Dylan’s new movie ‘Echo in the Canyon’ celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to what became known as the California Sound. The film was directed by former Capitol Records boss Andrew Slater and includes an array of artists including Brian Wilson, Graham Nash, Michelle Phillips, Ringo Starr and the final screen interview with Tom Petty. Its release follows Dylan’s album of cover versions of some of the best known songs from the era which included tracks from the likes of Jackson Browne, Fiona Apple and Norah Jones.

You can read more from the interview here and in the meantime here’s the trailer to the movie which opens in the UK on June 8th.
