Jingle Bells Friday – Spiced Rum! How can we have Christmas without spiced rum?

Time is marching on, and it is indeed starting to look a lot like Christmas as the decorative street lights come on and that bottle of mulled wine edges its way to the front of the drinks cabinet (other storage options are available).  So heat that wine, grab a mince pie and set yourself up for another pre-Christmas weekend with some fine and varied musical offerings.

Lennie Gallant has the right attitude to the festive season, as he declares “I’m gonna have a Merry Christmas even if Kills Me.”  Sure his heart may be broken, and his gal’ is gone but as he notes “Christmas is the best time of the whole bloody year.”  Americana UK is inclined to think kindly of this message of over consumption of alcohol and passing out under the tree as a perfect antidote to the blues…

There’s a lot of Christmas nostalgia on this new bluegrass Christmas song from Tammy Rogers & Thomm Jutz. As they suggest, is there anything better than winter snow fun? Other than Festive Nutroast, of course, but building a six foot tall snowman comes a close second.

There’s some more nostalgia on Catherine MacLellan‘s ‘Calling You Home‘ a lovely take on the seasonal wish to be together with loved ones who are far away: “Miles and miles of open highway Are calling you tonight“.  But just remember folks, public transport is your greener alternative to driving…

Of course not everyone will make it home, and Oh My God! It’s The Church who slightly worryingly describe themselves as “purveyors of sexy Jesus.”  Hmm….what would Sexy Jesus Do?  But don’t worry, ‘Christmas ain’t Cancelled‘ is a big singer-songwriter Christmas ballad.  Phew!

To finish this week’s emerging theme of travel, nostalgia and longing for that old-fashioned homely Christmas here’s Jillian Antinora‘s take on ‘I’ll be Home for Christmas’ from her holiday EP ‘The Joys Of Christmas.‘  Now, where’s the eggnog?

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
