Jingle Bells Friday – why not a simple Christmas this year?

It can all get a bit hectic, can’t it?  The rushing around, the buying enough food to feed an ungrateful horde, the endless shopping.  Is this really what the Spirit of Winterval should be?  Isn’t there something  at the core of it all that we’re overlooking?  Of course there is and….surely you know us well enough by now…the true meaning of Christmas is banjos.  You know it, we know it.  So picks at the ready, and let it roll, let it roll, let it roll….

What’s that?  Not a rousing cheer of agreement?  Well that’s disappointing.  But wait!  Maybe there is another true meaning of the end of year celebration. And we reckon – even though it may occur in the middle of the Summer – Paul Kelly may just have hit the nail on the head.  Being with people you care about, yeah that’s it.

Of course that’s not always an option, and there can be a host of reasons why – that’s something that Tammy Rogers & Thomm Jutz have been thinking about.  And they admit that “while we have all the cheer with all of those that we hold dear / It’s going to be a lonesome Christmas for someone else this year.

And whilst we’re thinking of others lets celebrate the spirit of the season with the wish that “every heart be glad, set aside regrets they’ve had” as we’re encouraged to do by Ranchers for Peace  on a song from their Christmas themed red vinyl 7″ single release (surely just perfect for the vinyl enthusiast in your life).

One thing we can probably bet on not having for Christmas is a white Christmas.  With this global warming?  You’ll be lucky.  Not everyone is that pleased to see the mounds of white stuff (apparently members of the government are quite keen on it though, allegedly) anyway – to some the thought of snow falling onto an already snowy scene evokes not a joyous bacchanal but rather a vision of bleak prospects – as Tall Heights remind us on their take on ‘In the Bleak Midwinter.’

Of course the other way to escape all that Christmas hustle and bustle is to become a tech billionaire, build yourself a rocket and, just like the Christmas Jug Band, spend Christmas on the Moon.  It’s a terrible place for parties though – no real atmosphere.

And so we leave you for this week – and with just one more Jingle Bells compilation to come in…not quite a full seven days, as the Americana UK Elves will be packing away their quills for another year.   Happy last minute shopping….

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
