Jon Boden’s fourth solo album out soon, tour to follow

Jon Boden’s fourth solo album has been announced – it’s called ‘Rose in June‘ and will be out on Hudson Records on the 1st of November.  It isn’t the direct follow up to 2017’s ‘Afterglow‘ which was the second of a trilogy of albums drawing inspiration from a post-apocalypse vision of a world without fossil fuels.  Instead ‘Rose in June‘ sees Jon Boden reunited with The Remnant Kings for a new set of recordings drawn from the live repertoire.

There are a number of songs that show up in concert but haven’t yet been committed to a record.  Some are traditional songs, some are cover versions such as a striking version of Kate Bush’s  ‘Hounds of Love‘, and some are new arrangements of Boden’s own songs. Speaking of the album and the band Jon Boden noted that “since this band was debuted live at Cambridge Folk Festival on the mainstage in 2016 we’ve been able to tour the UK and play many festivals in this bigger line-up so it felt very important to get into the studio and record lots of the stuff that is central to the live set“.

Album Track List

The band will also be going out for a short tour in November, with the following dates:

24/11/19 – RNCM Concert Hall, Manchester

And as a taster for what’s to come, here’s the epic title track which records a historical shipwreck.  Jon Boden has given some background on the song, saying that it was “learnt from the singing of the wonderful and much-missed Lou Killen. The song describes the true events of Tuesday December 17, 1872. The graves of Andrew Davidson and John Allen can be seen at the parish church of St Monans.“.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
