Julian Taylor “Opening The Sky (Acoustic Version)” – letter to the future

This is a great reimaging of a song from Julian Taylor’s album ‘Beyond The Reservoir‘ taking it in a more acoustic direction for a more organic folky feel.  Julian Taylor explains his thoughts on why he has re-recorded it as “Every song that I’ve written is first composed acoustically. I wanted to explore this particular song with more acoustic elements like mandolin and dobro and see how it might sound without the fully executed arrangement.  The original version includes a full band and full string quartet. This new acoustic version breaks things down to their basics elements and allows you to focus on the lyrics a bit more.

And the lyrics are quite important – and personal: “‘Opening The Sky’ was written for my daughter.  It’s a letter that I wrote her after I was in a car accident.  The accident scared me and I thought about what if I hadn’t made it out alive.  What if I wasn’t there to see her grow up and teach her some of the lessons in life that I’ve learnt along the way.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
