Margo Price wins US music prize

Some more news we’re spectacularly late with – honesty comes before a fall, or whatever the saying is. News from Pitchfork who report: “Margo Price has won the second annual American Music Prize for Best Debut Album. Her debut album Midwest Farmer’s Daughter was released last year by Jack White’s Third Man Records. Other finalists for the prize included Whitney, Julien Baker, EL VY, Big Thief, Gallant, Empress Of, case/lang/veirs, and Julien Baker. Price received $25,000 as part of the award. Watch her get surprised with the award at Third Man’s Nashville headquarters below (via The Tennessean). She said of the win in a statement:

“Even as a writer, sometimes my words escape me… So to paraphrase Chuck Prophet, ‘sometimes it’s hard to tell if you’re the dreamer or the dream.’ I could have easily slipped though the cracks of the twenty-first century. I’m beyond thankful my music has touched so many people. Many thanks to my family, friends and band mates, the kind folks at Third Man Records, Monotone, BMG, Paradigm, Sesac and the American Music Prize.”

The finalists and winner were selected by a jury of music industry and media professionals, including Pitchfork contributors Rebecca Haithcoat and Britt Julious. Find the full list of finalists below. Last year’s prize went to Kamasi Washington for his album The Epic.
