Matt McManamon “Out Of The Cold” – things are looking up

In a previous musical life Matt McManamon was frontman of Dead 60s – with which band he scored 5 UK top 40 hits, toured with Morrisey, Kasabian and The Coral.  Dead 60s were seen on Top of the Pops and at Glastonbury and everywhere in between.  Not such an Americana band though.  However, today’s song comes from the expanded version of Matt McManamon’s debut solo album ‘Scally Folk‘ and is more than a nod to the Liverpudlian bands who had found inspiration from The Byrds.  There’s also something of Sheepdogs in the guitar work to these ears – although the song is in no way Southern Rock – not even Canadian Southern Rock.

Out of the Cold‘ takes an optimistic look at past mistakes, affirming that they will lead to better next steps rather than an avalanche of future errors.  As McManamon says: “Trial and error can be a daunting and confusing experience, but in my opinion an essential experience for success and ultimately happiness.  Lyrically I wanted this song to exude a feeling of self-preservation, although this draws on (as most of my songs do) life experience. I feel listeners from all walks and stages of life would be able to relate in some way or another to the sentiments of: 1. Staying positive  2.Staying focused  3. Staying calm. And NOT focusing on any negatives that might be looming throughout daily life.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
