New Sam Outlaw out next month

Sam Outlaw has shared details for his next album, entitled ‘Tenderheart,’ which comes out April 14th on Six Shooter Records. The 13-track collection of originals was recorded in the San Fernando Valley and co-produced by Outlaw alongside Martin Pradler. He enlisted many of the same musicians that made his first album, 2015’s ‘Angeleno,’: harmony singer Molly Jenson, pedal steel Jeremy Long and guitarist Danny Garcia, along with Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) and Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket). In addition, ‘Tenderheart’ features local mariachi group Erwin Vasquez and Mariachi Teocuitatlan. And on top of all that, he’s playing a UK show on March 30th at Oslo in Hackney. Here’s the tracklisting along with the opening track from the record. Continue reading “New Sam Outlaw out next month”

Aimee Mann releases first video from new album – Watch

The new album by Aimee Mann ‘Mental Illness’ will be released on March 31st via SuperEgo/Membran, and she’s released her first video from it today. If you’ve ever seen any of her videos previously you’ll know she sets the bar high and this new track “Patient Zero” is ostensibly a song about Hollywood disappointment, influenced by the writings of Raymond Chandler and Nathanael West  (‘Day Of The Locust’). The video is directed by Daniel Ralston and loosely based on Ronald Harwood’s 1980 play ‘The Dresser.’  Continue reading “Aimee Mann releases first video from new album – Watch”

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy to release Merle Haggard covers album – Listen

You did read that headline correctly. Rolling Stone reports: “Merle Haggard’s influence knew no bounds, attracting fans from all genres of music. That powerful pull has inspired a new album from indie folk-rock artist Bonnie “Prince” Billy, a forthcoming collection of Haggard covers called Best Troubadour. Bonnie “Prince” Billy, also known as Will Oldham, is a longtime fan of the “Okie From Muskogee” Hall of Famer, having covered a Haggard song at his first public performance 25 years ago. He also interviewed the legendary songwriter for a magazine feature in 2009 and included a cover of “Because of Your Eyes” on a 7″ vinyl release in 2011.  Continue reading “Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy to release Merle Haggard covers album – Listen”

Jim Lauderdale “London Southern” (Proper Records, 2017)

Three decades into his career Jim Lauderdale has achieved, with London Southern, a long cherished ambition to record an album in London. The temptation to do so was driven by excellent motives – he could record at old friend Nick Lowe’s studio and could also avail himself of Nick’s band. The result is a richly toned traditional country album the opener of which – Sweet Time – will have the listener scurrying for the sleeve notes. Is this an unfamiliar Hank Williams song ? Linah Rocio “Warrior Talk” (Aveline Records, 2017)

We’re really stretching the boundaries of Americana UK with Chilean born, Swiss based Linah Rocio’s latest album. OK, there’s a banjo to be heard on the second last song here, Megan although it struggles to be heard over the inventive percussion, dextrous double bass and roomy piano that clothe the song. Rocio describes artists such as PJ Harvey and Joan As Policewoman as her heroes and as such she fits within the set of strong willed singer/songwriters who are pushing the envelope with their music, rock, jazz and traces of the avant-garde all part of the experience. There are songs which sound like Laura Nyro fronting a gnarly punked up Steely Dan as on Everything while Simon Rupp on guitar sounds at times like Marc Ribot. Brigitte DeMeyer & Will Kimbrough announce UK Dates

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Brigitte DeMeyer and not Nashville based singer-songwriter-guitarist Will Kimbrough have announced some UK tour dates in support of their new album Mockingbird Soul which we described as “a wonderful thing to behold”. Though Kimbrough can play just about any noise-making object on the planet, he was named the Americana Music Association’s 2004 Instrumentalist of the Year and is renowned as a guitarist who’s collaborated and toured with Todd Snider, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Buffett and many others, while DeMeyer has opened for Bob Dylan and Gregg Allman and toured with John Mayall. So you know, they’re both quite good.  Here are those dates.  Continue reading “Brigitte DeMeyer & Will Kimbrough announce UK Dates”
