Readers’ Picks: Richmond Fontaine live at BBC Scotland

This week’s pick comes from Fiona Winders who lives in Malmo, Sweden.

There is very little that I need to say here as Fiona covers it all beautifully:

“On their farewell tour of the UK, Americana legends Richmond Fontaine stopped by at BBC Radio Scotland and Ricky Ross’ Another Country. As well as playing some of their own tracks, Willy and the band offered a bonus in their cover of Camper Van Beethoven’s ‘Sweetheart’, a song which brings beautifully poignant imagery to a tale of US military bombing the living hell out of some country, maybe any country.
As in everything they ever played, Richmond Fontaine add their own special pathos and truth to CBVs composition. Willy Vlautin, Dan Eccles, Sean Oldham and Freddy Turjillo leaning into each other, finding the tender-sweet heart of the song (no pun intended), you could almost believe this was an RF original.
And Willy’s comment at the end…  typically self-deprecating, the perfect coda. Richmond Fontaine, much missed!”
Much appreciation to Fiona for her excellent choice. Click the link below to watch the video.

From buying my first record aged 10 and attending my first gig at 14, music has been a lifelong obsession. A proud native of Suffolk, I have lived in and around Manchester for the best part of 30 years. My idea of a perfect day would be a new record arriving in the post in the morning, watching Ipswich Town win in the afternoon followed by a gig and a pint with my mates at night,
