Sanford: “Figured I’d Ask Anyway” – worth a try

On ‘Figured I’d Ask Anyway’ Jay Sanford takes a road trip back to where he’d been before and, whilst knowing that you an never really go back again, takes the opportunity to ask some questions that he really already knows the answer to.  It’s not uncommon.

The band for which he uses his surname – and for which he writes, makes the arrangements and plays everything – draws on the usual Americana touchstones Townes Van Zandt, Tom Petty, John Prine, and Jason Isbell, with the song title a partial reworking of a line of Dylan’s  – but also, Sanford: says, brings in elements of inspiration from Sneaky Pete from Gram Parson’s Flying Burrito Brothers, and the likes of Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
