Small Venue Heroes: The Surfing Magazines

The Surfing Magazines

Formed in 2017, The Surfing Magazines are a super-group comprising two thirds of The Wave Pictures and one half of Slow Club. Showcasing the myriad talents of frontman Dave Tattersall, along with Franic Rozycki (The Wave Pictures), Charles ‘Doctor’ Watson (Slow Club), plus their mate Dom ‘The Dominator’ Brider on drums they fuse soundtrack surf, weird pop and americana.

Steeped in the west coast sound of late 60s and early 70s rock – especially Neil Young and Crazy Horse – they brilliantly combine literary fiction with musical prowess to deliver some of the finest and most underrated americana inspired rock that I’ve come across in recent years. The fact that they’re still peddling their wares on the small venue circuit is in some ways a sad reflection of the times we live in and the value that society appears to attach to raw and real music. On the other hand, for those in the know it offers an opportunity to see some scintillating americana at close quarters.

Beginning in January 2022, their current UK tour has taken them from The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth to The Hare & Hounds in Birmingham via The Portland Arms in Cambridge to name just a few. Disappointed that you haven’t managed to catch them yet? Fear not – shows north of the border still lie ahead including at Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh on 3 March and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow the following night. Don’t take my word for it, check them out for yourself . ‘Voices Carry Through the Mist’ is a great place to start with some distinctly ‘Cowgirl in the Sand’ inspired jamming. Enjoy.
