Steve Gunn “New Moon” – Listen

Sometimes good things come out of bad situations, Steve Gunn had taken a pretty big blow after the release of his last album ‘Eyes On The Lines‘, when his father died from cancer.  Steve and his father had got very close during the treatment, talking openly and deeply in a way that maybe they hadn’t before,  so this was a heavy knock that took some getting over.  Two years later and there’s a new album ;The Unseen In Between, to be released on January 18th which draws on some of these emotions, and which Steve was helped in putting together by Tony Garnier, Bob Dylan’s musical director and longest standing bandmate.

New Moon‘ is a richly layered slice of psych-folk, full of shimmering reverb guitar which floats on a stream of consciousness as it builds to a double finale of singing strings and pulsing electric guitar.  The lyrics are subtle and imbued with that elusive sense of verging on something revelatory “I see a glimmer / across the wall through the mirror / past the streets beyond the weather / to that place that no one seems to know”.

Steve Gunn is undertaking a European Tour in 2019, with four dates in the UK :

5th April – London, UK – Oslo
6th April – Birmingham, UK – Hare & Hounds
7th April – Leeds, UK – The Brudenell Social Club
8th April – Manchester, UK – Deaf Institute

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
