The Ormewoods “The Bedroom Sessions” (Independent, 2016)

Thithe-ormewoodss is unashamedly happy music from a new Atlanta based duo Don McCollister and Claire Pearson who appear all loved up and want the world to know about it. And why not in a year full of fraction and strife? Just to add to the frisson we are told that the record was recorded in the bedroom of Claire Pearson who wrote the lyrics on the ten tracks here. There is an energy and enthusiasm to the music which is refreshing and uplifting and whilst the excellent “Hey Babe” has a rootsy feel in the main the songs are mainstream pop fare.

Don McCollister is a multi instrumentalist and with the odd exception  all tracks feature just the duo. Nice harmonies abound especially on “Sleep Like Strangers” and there is a nice interchange on “Delaware Ave” a song about the opportunities for a day / evening out where the couple fail to agree – haven’t we all been there? The album closer “Love 101” with the strapline “you make love so easy” sums up the heart warming stuff on show. So if you are looking for angst there is a need to look elsewhere, but why not a little light hearted joy now and then?

Happy music to uplift us in times of strife

Living in North London allows me access to many great music venues so I can get to see as many Americana and Bluegrass (yes I love Bluegrass!) acts as I can. My other passion is football and I follow the North London team with the Cockerel as it's badge. Thankfully I have a fantastic wife who shares these obsessions or else I would probably be single by now!
