Track Premiere: Audrey Spillman “Summertime”

Audrey Spillman has had a lot of things to do recently – get married, check; starting a family, check; record an album in Nashville produced by husband Neilson Hubbard, check and…yes, check.  The album is called ‘Neon Dream‘ and it covers a lot of Americana ground as is shown by this cover of ‘Summertime‘ which moves from growling bluesy guitar through a sultry sung jazz flecked take on the classic song from Porgy & Bess.

Spillman says she’s felt a connection to the track from the first time she heard it on an Ella Fitzgerald compilation album in high school. Tapping into a dark and swampy vibe in the studio, she hjas taken it in a very different direction, as she notes, “The reason I’m so drawn to that song is that it creates a visceral reaction within me. As an artist, I try to create that emotion as well to the best of my ability. I want to create an intimacy with the listener by creating an emotive space. That is the theme that runs through this album for me.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
