VanWyck “Supermarket Line” – Listen

News is circulating that VanWyck has completed the follow up to last year’s excellent ‘An Average Woman‘ – the new album is ‘Molten Rock‘ and will be released on November 15.  The intricate finger-picking on the uptempo lead single ‘Supermarket Line‘ hints at a more openly optimistic release this time around – well, perhaps.

Supermarket Line‘ takes in the whole world from a shared perspective – the queue in the shop has excited students on the way to a party, but there’s also the pathos of the man in front who “buys a salad / to go with his bottle of red and the two beers / that he needs early in the morning“.  Joy and despair, mixed together and whilst VanWyck patiently makes a mental list of the jobs that need doing – feed the family, help the neighbour with that trash can that’s gotten too heavy – the news in the background lets her watch the world “burn, bust and go up in smoke“.  Light and Dark – we’d expect no less from VanWyck.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
