Video: Bror Gunnar Jansson “The Cotten-Eyed Joe”

Bror Gunnar Jansson takes a familiar, traditional folk song (popularised by Rednex) and truly makes it his own.  It’s a stylish video and a stylish performance from the Swedish singer-songwriter.  Having discovered the Bob Wills interpretation and various others, Jansson explains: “I started thinking about making my own version of it, which made me research a little bit more about the history of the song. Through that, realising that it was first made by African American slaves during the 1800s made the song grow even more on me.”  Jansson’s version is full of understated emotion and all the more powerful for it.  Check out Jansson’s blend of roots-genres on last year’s critically acclaimed album ‘They Found My Body in a Bag’.
