Video Premiere: Bluenose B “Another Place”

Songwriter Stephen Lawson formed Bluenose B in the 1980s.  Since then, the group has been through various changes in line-up and style but has always remained true to a focus on lyrical purpose and intelligent song-craft.  This new single is taken from the upcoming album, ‘Harrowby Road’, and features excellent guitar-work from John Kettle, complementing an engaging vocal melody.

‘Another Place’ is a delicate exploration of love and loss.  It was written in tribute to Stephen Lawrence’s mother, who became terminally ill.  Lawrence and his siblings worked together to enable her to continue living at home, which was near to ‘Another Place’, an art installation created by  Sir Antony Gormley (Angel of the North).  On Crosby beach, Merseyside, 100 iron figures, cast from Gormley’s own body, gaze out to sea silently while the world carries on around them.  The new song is inspired by, and named after, this incredibly affecting artistic expression of the relationship between humanity and the natural world.  The sculptures, some of which are as far as a kilometre out to sea, seem to measure the human life against the tides and the passage of time at a deeper environmental level.

Lawrence explains how the sculptures inspired his new song: “Although it can be an eerie sight, when the light is right and the sun’s beams break the clouds it gave me hope that one day me and my family could meet in another place.”  The video is beautifully shot on the coast and we can see, close up, the effect of time on the sculptures, which are now installed permanently on Crosby Beach.  The combination of the music, the lyrics and the artwork itself have a real emotional resonance and, perhaps, we can all acknowledge those universal journeys: life to death; loss to hope.
