Video Premiere: Calling Cadence “Burn These Blues”

Here is an immediately likeable song from Los Angeles-based band Calling Cadence.  Every element of ‘Burn These Blues’, and this stripped back performance of the single, just works; from the smooth, warm acoustic bass of Elijah Thomson (Father John Misty, Nathaniel Rateliff) to the soaring uplifting backing vocals, it all comes together in a song that demonstrates Calling Cadence’s fine songcraft.  Particularly delightful is the vocal interplay between Oscar Bugarin and Rae Cole.  Their complementary singing voices are wearily beautiful in combination, especially when they soar, rising in pitch through the chorus.

The video was recorded live in the studio, allowing us the privilege of seeing the musicians at work.  The band’s debut self-titled album has just been recorded, mixed, and mastered all in analogue at Infinitespin Studios in Los Angeles.  Recording in this way helped to recreate the feel and sound of the classic albums that inspired the band.  The album is out now on Hi-Res Records, a brand new label created by producer and engineer Matt Linesch and Dave Swartz, who owns the California Vintage Guitar shop next door to Linesch’s studio, Infinitespin.  The story goes that Oscar Bugarin visited the shop and started playing guitar; Swartz was so impressed that he introduced him to Linesch and the new record label was created to put out Calling Cadence’s music and produce analogue recordings for other artists of the best high resolution quality possible.  As for Calling Cadence, the band name and several of the songs came from Bugarin’s time in the military, where he won the army’s version of ‘The Voice’ and his life veered in a very different direction.  With plenty of airplay on Los Angeles and Nashville radio, they look like a band that’s going places.  Check them out.
