Video Premiere: Chris Murphy “Till the World Lifts its Head Again”

There’s a wonderful, foot-tapping, driving rhythm in this new single from multi-instrumentalist Chris Murphy.  It’s a joy to see all the performers in action, particularly Murphy himself: his violin-work is simply stunning.  This single is taken from his forthcoming album, ‘Sovereign’, which is due for release on 30th June.  In spite of the trials of the last year, Murphy has been inspired to challenge himself and cover a range of styles by working with over thirty guest musicians on the new record.  They bring all their gifts and experience and help Murphy to create a full, layered sound that defies genre.  As Murphy says: “There is something so unique and inspiring that happens when creating music with all these amazing musicians.”  Indeed.

On ‘Till the World Lifts its Head Again’, Murphy is joined by the likes of bassist Hal Cragin (Iggy Pop, Rufus Wainwright), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello) on drums and Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams) on electric guitar amongst others.  The result is as absorbing as it is timely.  Although the lyrics and themes feel very current, the song was actually written in response to a pre-pandemic dream and the words came to Murphy as far back as 2019.  Chris Murphy clearly saw something coming and, throughout the album, the songs cover the themes of how those risen high can fall and finding hope in the future.

After over twenty albums and five hundred songs, the prolific singer-songwriter from Los Angeles continues to push himself and search for something striking and new.  While you’re waiting for the new album, check out the inspiring ‘Till the world Lifts its Head Again’, an excellent taste of what’s to come.
