Daisy Chute possesses a voice of enchanting beauty, perfect for cinematic, dark-romantic storytelling. In ‘Secondhand Heart’, her words float above gently flowing keys, delicate finger-picked guitar and Midori Jaeger’s warm cello: “Suffocated by the past // A seed that never grew // My first will haunt me ’til my last // And overshadow you…Though it fit like a glove // This secondhand love // It tears us apart // It’s secondhand, secondhand // My secondhand heart.” The sense of inevitability, of doomed love, pervades both the music and Chute’s clever lyrics. The excellent Bartek Podkowa-directed video is like a movie, bringing the story to life. We see a couple meeting and coming to know one another but, by the end, there’s a sense of regret. The film required a 15-strong cast and crew, including Carmen Law and Emannuel Akinkuolie who take on the roles of the couple whose romance is set to unravel. ‘Secondhand Heart’ is the first part of a three-video series and is taken from her six-song EP, ‘Songs of Solace’, a concept piece that follows the beginning, middle and end of a relationship. The EP is out now, an engaging, emotional collection of songs enhanced by such artfully-directed and atmospheric videos.
