Video Premiere: Iona Griffey “Colourblind”

Check out Iona Griffey’s new single ‘Colourblind’, which showcases the Suffolk singer-songwriter’s captivating voice.  The song features the melodic bass and keys and the soaring electric guitar of multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Coe, who fills out the sound with his fine musicianship.  However, it is Griffey’s folky vocal that really stands out here: it’s clear and pure and demonstrates an impressive range.

Written after experiencing the heartbreaking end of a relationship, the song is about giving your love to someone who doesn’t fully appreciate it.  Through her heartfelt words: “I gave you the whole rainbow, but you were colourblind,” Griffey explores the idea of bringing joy and colour to a relationship when your partner is blind to all you give. The result is toxic and you need to find the strength to move on.  Griffey explains: “I think many people in bad relationships should use my song as inspiration to strive for better.”  Released in the week of Valentine’s Day, ‘Colourblind’ is very deliberately celebrating self-love and having the strength to take control, rather than the romantic love that is usually the subject of songs at this time of year.

Griffey has featured on BBC Radio Suffolk and BBC Introducing in Suffolk as well as Amazing Radio UK and USA.  Building towards the release of her debut album, Griffey is writing songs that blend folk, rock and pop sensibilities.  She began singing at a young age and the prolific songwriter has already penned over 50 songs to choose from.  She focuses on personal experiences and open-hearted reflection in her music, aiming to empower and inspire young women and counter negativity through her her songwriting.  Look out for ‘Lovers & Strangers’, the new album due for release later in 2023.
