Video Premiere: Jeffery Straker “Morning Light”

From the moment Jeffery Straker sings: “I’m staring at the stars // But I ain’t Galileo,” over flowing piano, it’s easy to get lost in ‘Morning Light’.  There’s a cinematic quality to the beautiful lyrics and sumptuous vocal melody over tumbling, rolling keys.  Simply and directly, this is lovely music. In the video, Scott Perrie accompanies on acoustic guitar and provides harmony vocals.  ‘Morning Light’ is a thought-provoking, deeply personal song, written about the passing of Straker’s mother.

He explains: “My mom had been very sick in hospital but started to make an incredible recovery. The song was written while everything was seemingly ok. It was short lived and she very suddenly passed away.”  It brings together feelings of grief and resolution and our need to dream and be valued; it’s complex, intimate material that is handled sensitively and becomes universal.

Throughout the coronavirus crisis, Straker has been keeping busy with his Pandemic Piano Backyard Tour.  Through word of mouth, the bookings have kept coming and he’s enjoyed performing over 30 small, socially distant shows over the summer.  The Canadian singer-songwriter has come a long way from the isolated Saskatchewan grain farm on which he was raised.  Jeffery Straker now has seven albums under his belt and ‘Morning Light’ is the latest single from the next full-length release, due in 2021.  We’re pleased to share the video premiere on AUK.  Enjoy.
