Video Premiere: King Rib “Corner of the World”

Here is ‘Corner of the World’, the melodic second single from King Rib’s forthcoming EP.  King Rib is one of Craig McIntyre’s musical projects and, though the Glasgow singer-songwriter is usually known for something more hardcore, this sees him continue to develop his mellow, Americana sound.  It suits him well.  Craig McIntyre’s smooth vocal feels effortless, floating above busy instrumental layers provided by Gareth Jamieson’s keys, Jimi Maffei’s percussion and Calum Maclean’s pedal steel.  That swooning steel, in particular, transports us to the America of McIntyre’s reflective lyrics.  ‘Corner of the World’ is about that feeling of isolation: growing up in the middle of nowhere but dreaming of something bigger and better, being drawn towards the imagined glamour of Music City and America’s glamorous music venues.

The ‘On Our Island’ EP is McIntyre’s second release as King Rib.  the songs were written during lockdown with most of the collaborators’ contributions coming remotely.  McIntyre explains: “Making On Our Island essentially got me through this past year.  After recording some acoustic demos at home I linked up with drummer/producer Jimi Maffei. Together we spent some time on arrangements, turning these songs into something special. The contributions of Jimi and other musicians around the country took us in a new and exciting direction.”

King Rib’s absorbing new EP, ‘On Our Island’, is due for release on 11th June.  Filled with smart lyrical introspection and inspired by the likes of Gram Parsons, this is well worth checking out.  Enjoy.
