Video Premiere: Matt Patershuk “Turn the Radio Up”

Matt Patershuk’s latest single is about valuing what you have, the swift passage of time and making the most of time with loved ones.  It’s gently beautiful, featuring engaging melody, excellent guitar-work and Patershuk’s characterful vocal, full of authentic feeling.  It’s a classic sound that is elevated by Patershuk’s quality songcraft, sensitive lyrics and sincere delivery.  As you listen, great songwriters like John Prine will come to mind; it’s a fair comparison.  ‘Turn the Radio Up’ is accompanied by an affecting video created by Scott Gillies of Azara Effect Productions.  It’s a gorgeous animation with a smart narrative, taking us back in time through the lives of a middle-aged couple.  Many of us will be able to associate with the sense of a family’s journey together.  The sentimentality is pitched just right and the feelings evoked by the video linger long after its over.

Patershuk says of the song: “I think some who know me consider me to be a pessimist. I’m really very hopeful in fact. However, I think to be as hopeful, or faithful, or loving as we can be, we must be honest about the realities of our situations. Our time is so precious. It’s good to appreciate it whenever we can. Our cigarettes are burning.”

The song is taken from Patershuk’s album ‘An Honest Effort’, due for release on 19th November.  His grandad used to say that, “God loves a trier,” and these songs are populated by characters striving, trying and doing their best against unfavourable odds.  Life is uncertain but these stories are about the hope, redemption and fulfilment that can come from making the attempt to live a better life.  It’s a heartfelt record from the Canadian singer-songwriter that tackles real experiences and subjects that listeners can easily relate to.  ‘Turn the Radio Up’ is a perfect entry-point for the record.  Check it out.
