Video Premiere: Society of Rockets “Calico”

For over twenty years, San Francisco’s Society of Rockets have been on a musical journey through a range of genres, exploring an eclectic mix of styles and proving themselves to be incredibly adaptable.  Their songs may be varied but they have in common catchy hooks and absorbing, shimmering melodies.  Here is the video premiere of ‘Calico’ taken from the album ‘Unearthed’; their seventh album builds on the quirky country-folk of their last release, ‘Family Ways’.

On the new songs, layers of sound are introduced by a talented group of players showcasing real instrumental skill, including Robin Wageman on mellotron, Mike Evans’ lap steel, David Isbister’s electric piano and Hammond organ and Lorelei David’s haunting, hazy theremin.  The combination is expertly blended to creative a distinctive, cosmic feel, just right for that moment when summer begins to fall into autumn.

‘Calico’ is accompanied by a charming video, directed and animated by Lorelei David.  Cut-out paper, petals, pine cones and a collection of other found objects are used to create a series of scenes and symbols.  Society of Rockets emerged from the psychedelic act Shimmer Kids Underpop Association led by singer-songwriter Joshua Babcock and they retain some of that dreamy psychedelia in both their music and in this visual.  Check it out.
