Video: Watchhouse “New Star”

“Someday we’ll be older…at least we’re all in this together,” sing Watchhouse on their delicate, calming single ‘New Star’ and, after our lives have been on hold for so many months, these simple, direct lines feel particularly resonant.  The song is charged with hope and the strength we find in relationships with loved ones.  This feeling of community is reinforced by the video, which focuses on shared experiences, family gatherings to celebrate milestones and the simple joy to be found in the company of others.  Above all, though, this is a beautiful song, arranged and mixed with great care, giving warmth to all the musical layers and drawing attention to the excellent harmonies.  Particular notable are Clint Mullican’s upright bass and Andrew Marlin’s uplifting mandolin.

Watchhouse are the outstanding duo Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, formerly known as Mandolin Orange.  With the new name, comes a musical rebirth, though their sound remains indebted to the roots of Appalachian folk.  The change finds the pair in a reflective mood as they contemplate the personal, such as becoming parents, through to broader, more sweeping themes, including politics and climate change.  Marlin reflects on their reinvention: “We’re different people than when we started this band.  We’re setting new intentions, taking control of this thing again.”  Their self-titled new album, co-produced by Josh Kaufman (The National; Bonny Light Horseman), is due for release on 13th August and it promises to be one of the highlights of the summer.  Enjoy.
