Woods End “Pickaxe” – Listen

Woods End started out in 2012 in Umeå, and the Swedish melancholic folk-rock band released their second album, the imaginative entitled ‘II‘ last year and have now started working on the follow up (and dare we guess at it being called ‘III‘?).  Today’s song, ‘Pickaxe‘, is something of a taster for the new material.

It’s fair to say that ‘Pickaxe‘ is not exactly a new direction for the band – not that that is a bad thing.  There’s layers of guitar and a dark intense mood which permeates the song, and lyrics which tread a path of spiralling despair – “I will walk with the ghosts in this broken world/…/ the walls are falling down and love is torn apart“.  It sounds great.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
