Yo La Tengo “Wasn’t Born To Follow” – Listen

Yo La Tengo will release ‘Sleepless Night‘ a new 6-track EP on October 9th, via Matador Records.  It’s a set of covers of songs by the likes of Bob Dylan and The Delmore Brothers – and in this particular case the ever-relevant music of The Byrds.

Wasn’t Born to Follow‘ appeared memorably on the soundtrack of Easy Rider, in a memorable scene of….well, easy riding as Captain America (Wyatt) and Billy eat up the miles of empty road with an endless vista of trees, rivers and mountains.  Trouble free – for the moment – with no cares and nothing to bug them.  It’s a Covid dream these days.

It has similar memories for Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplin: “I’m sure I heard the Byrds’ song for the first time when my mom took me and a bunch of my friends to see Easy Rider. (One kid was forbidden by his parents from joining us, as was my younger brother. My dad took my brother to see Butch Cassidy instead, and I’m guessing my friend stayed home and did homework.)

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
