‘Reverse the Flow’ by Oregon-based songwriter Alice Di Micele is a heartfelt song, aiming to encourage positivity in challenging times. Offering hopefulness through her uplifting words, Di Micele is searching for perspective and seeking consensus: “Every inch of this Earth is sacred ground, it’s all sacred ground // It’s all sacred ground. // We’re still here on the ground // We’re still here on this sacred ground.”
The song is built around the gentle sway and rolling rhythm of Artie Watson’s percussion, over which Di Micele’s voice and acoustic guitar flow through a memorable melody. Di Micele’s vocal performance is powerful and direct, demonstrating an impressive range lifting up from those low notes and tones, seemingly effortlessly. Her band, Force of Nature, deliver subtle instrumental layers, with Rob Kohler adding bass beneath Bret Levick’s electric guitar; rising, hymn-like backing vocals and Skip Edwards’ piano and Hammond B3 help to elevate ‘Reverse the Flow’.
Di Micele says of the song’s themes: “‘Reverse the Flow’ speaks to the turbulence that we are experiencing in the present time. In the practice of yoga, we do inversions, which help us integrate whatever is going on in our lives, shift our perspective, relieve stress, and increase blood flow to the brain, which helps improve mental clarity. In whitewater kayaking, you need to be able to roll your boat back up while running rapids, should you go upside down. This song is a reminder that no matter what is happening with politics and human interaction – no matter how upside-down we feel – we are still here on this living planet. Nobody can ever take from us the knowledge that we are here on this sacred ground.”
This is the title track from Di Micele’s upcoming album, which is due for release tomorrow, 10th October 2025. Incredibly, this will be the 18th full-album release from the prolific Di Micele. Over the years, she has shared stages with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Joan Baez, honing her craft. Through the power of word and song, Di Micele aims to connect listeners to the natural world, transforming lives and supporting healing processes – tough times call for a positive response. Enjoy.
