This song came out at the end of September – released to mark Canada’s annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which aims to address the ongoing impacts of the Canadian Indian Residential School System. Nadjiwan’s ‘Breaking The Dawn,’ is the first single from the new album “Now Is The Right Time Of Year”, out Oct. 24 via Heading North Music. It is, without any doubt, a powerful song of which Marc Meriläinen, the creative force behind Nadjiwan for the past three decades, says, “‘Breaking The Dawn’ is a song that speaks to a powerful turning point we’re living through: the resurgence of Indigenous arts, entertainment, politics, and activism. It reflects the spirit of renewal and resistance, and honours the cultural renaissance that’s taking place in Indigenous communities across the world. This song is both a celebration and a call to recognize the dawn of a new era for Indigenous culture.”
As a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, Cape Croker, Marc Meriläinen has used his music to build awareness of Indigenous culture, work that has expanded to his record label Meriläinen Music Inc., and its diverse roster consisting of Raven Reid, Josh Ritchie, Liv Wade, Berk Jodoin, Lancelot Knight and others.
And, you may notice that the accompanying track is a performance video – well, don’t worry, the Video Editor is onboard with the use of performance videos (which can be quite fun) for Track features, since they don’t really add a very different visual interpretation of the song in question. So, this may happen again. Don’t Panic.
