On World Book Day 2026, our call for short fiction: Americana stories…

Alexas_Fotos

AUK would like to invite fiction writers to submit short stories inspired by the world of Americana music for publication on Americana UK. Whether it’s a tale sparked by a particular song, a character shaped by the spirit of americana music, or a narrative that captures the essence of what draws us to this genre, we want to read your work. We’re looking for stories that speak to the themes, emotions and experiences that run through Americana: journeys and homecomings, loss and redemption, community and solitude, tradition and change.

This is an opportunity to explore the storytelling that sits at the heart of the music we love, through fiction that stands on its own whilst honouring the connection between literature and song.

Submission Guidelines

Word Count

  • 1,500 to 4,000 words
  • Stories outside of this range will not be considered

Content

  • Original, unpublished fiction only
  • Stories should have a clear connection to Americana music, whether through theme, mood, character or direct reference
  • All genres and styles welcome, from literary to genre fiction
  • Stories must be complete works, not excerpts

  • Submit as a Word document or PDF
  • Use 12-point font, double-spaced
  • Include your name and contact details on a separate cover page
  • Title and word count at the top of the manuscript
  • Do not include your name on the manuscript itself

Rights and Publication

  • By submitting, you confirm the work is your own and you hold the rights
  • First publication rights will belong to Americana UK
  • Rights revert to the author following publication
  • We aim to respond within eight weeks
  • Final submissions by 31st August 2026.
