We’re starting a new year of Tracks with a premiere from Barrel Flash who are a Minneapolis/St. Paul-based trio consisting of Julia Brown on vocals and piano, Ross Johnson on vocals, acoustic/electric guitar, harmonica and Priscilla Thomas on vocals, electric bass, guitar. They are all pretty busy people with a variety of backgrounds and musical interests – Julia is a proud member of the Unity Singers in St Paul and her last band, Sister Theda, released their EP in 2017; Ross has a passion for blues, British folk and rock, and projects a Bluegrass lilt derived from his dad; and Priscilla is a longtime member of the Minneapolis area folk music community being part of the group Sweet Rhubarb, as well as bringing jazz, R&B, and pop sensibilities into her writing and playing.
Ross Johnson told Americana UK about the background to ‘Between The Lines’: “We’re an American trio, but much of our song writing is influenced by our separate adventures in the UK and Ireland – and we love that music. I used to idly sketch on my travels there, and sometimes got mistaken for a struggling street artist, which was a perception I was happy to promote! Between The Lines celebrates the many times and ways you can fall in love. If even just for a moment, it can change you!”
‘Between The Lines’ is taken from Barrel Flash’s new album ‘ A Guide To Dancing Alone’ and features Mandy Fassett on violin and Reid Kruger on drums.
