Taken from her new album ‘Anarchist Gospel‘ which is released on February 3rd via New West Records, ‘New Day‘ picks away at love that is placed where maybe love should not be placed: “I’m love’s junkie / I’m love’s addict / You’d be too / If you ever had it” she sings, emphasizing how, sometimes, one way love can endure longer than it should.
In reality you can judge Sunny War by her friends – and the new album has contributions from a fine number of these. It was produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) and features appearances by Jim James, Allison Russell, David Rawlings, Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs, Micah Nelson, John James Tourville of The Deslondes, Kyshona Armstrong, Dennis Crouch. And more.
Speaking about ‘New Day‘ Sunny War has suggested that “It’s probably the most sensitive song on the album. It is very emo. For me, it is about how whimsical love can feel. When we fall out of love, we realize we were almost under a spell. To me, believing in love is much like believing in magic. And I believe in both.”
Of her musical influences Sunny War has commented “I don’t really make music with a traditional roots audience in mind. I like weird music, outsider music, like Daniel Johnston and Roky Erickson.” Other influences include AC/DC and Motley Crüe – but you won’t hear any of that today.
