We’re pleased to share the video premiere of Nate Currin’s ‘Let’s Stay In & Put a Dylan Record On’, which also features the sweet harmonies of Peyton Parker. Reflecting the gentle words of friendship and finding peace, the song begins quietly, with just acoustic guitar and the beautiful combination of Currin and Parker’s voices. The pair’s vocals are sublime: Currin’s characterful grit is balanced perfectly with the pure tone and melody delivered by Parker. As the song builds, Charlie Lowell’s keys add rich warmth and texture, and the result is absorbing. With subtle lighting and precise focus, the video, filmed by Lindsey Torres, artfully captures the recording at Gray Matters Studio in Nashville.
Currin told AUK about the song: “I wrote ‘Let’s Stay In & Put a Dylan Record On’ when contemplating what I wanted out of a relationship. During the Covid lockdowns, everyone was social distancing, and I was saying: nothing changed for me… I’d been doing this for years. Friends would try to get me to come out for years, and I just wanted to stay in with someone and listen to music or have a quiet night. I asked my buddy Matthew Odmark if we could use the studio in Nashville (Grey Matters), where we did a bulk of the record, if we could do some live videos while I was on tour. So in June, he helped me line it up. I asked my friends if they would play, and Matthew helped line up a videographer. So, it came together pretty easily. This live version is a little more mellow and laid back… almost as if we were all staying in and just listening to a record together. These are all friends of mine, so it was a joy just hanging out in the studio and playing the song low-key. I just got to work with so many old friends and musicians who have played on multiple records. Charlie Lowell did the keys, and he was originally part of Jars of Clay. I’ve known Charlie for like 12 or 13 years. My good friend Matt Koziol did the guitars, and we’ve played quite a few shows together, so that was awesome as well! And then having Peyton Parker sing was great, because she did the actual female vocal on the album version. It was a fun time of singing and playing together with no pressure! Recording in Nashville was simple and easy. The studio was there, I was passing through on tour, and all the musicians were there. It just made the most sense! I played a show in Nashville one night, and two days later, we recorded a series of live videos in the studio. So, the entire weekend was just one of music and fun.” Indeed, the sense of camaraderie and the friends’ chemistry come through in the performance and mirror the song’s lyrical message.
The original version of the song features on Currin’s ninth album, “Ghost Town”, which has just been released. This collection, written after a break-up, is about heartache and loss, the gaps in your life that were once filled by what you had. A talented writer with a characterful voice, Currin has been nominated for and won multiple awards for his songwriting, including five International Music & Entertainment Awards (IMEA), and his song ‘Oklahoma’ featured in the television show ‘Shameless’.
An antidote to social anxiety, ‘Let’s Stay In & Put a Dylan Record On’ is the perfect song for staying in and chilling out. Relax, put it on and do nothing but enjoy its mellow vibe.
