As some festivals stumble in the current economic climate, others grit their teeth and march forward despite the headwinds, and the “Gate To Southwell Festival” organisers are doing just that with the news that, true to his word, Richard Thompson OBE, has confirmed he will perform. Thompson was booked to play last July but, following a fall in the USA, had to withdraw at the last minute. Now he’s scheduled to headline the first night and will perform alongside his wife, the singer-songwriter Zara Phillips. A founding member of Fairport Convention back in 1967, Richard’s 60-year career has established his reputation as an international star and one of Britain’s greatest songwriters and guitarists. The Los Angeles Times once described him as “the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix”.
Also confirmed to appear on Saturday, July 4th, is the highly acclaimed Mancunian folk jazz funk blues (not this site’s usual fare!) troupe Honeyfeet, led by the brilliant vocals and flute of Rioghnach Connolly. Rioghnach will also perform in a duo with Ellis Davis. Honeyfeet will be building on the successes of their albums “Orange Whip” and “It’s Been A While, Buddy”, while Rioghnach – BBC Folk Singer of the Year in 2019 and 2020- is also well known for her work with The Breath on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records.
With more big names coming soon, the festival 2026 will take place at Kirklington Lakes from Thursday, July 2nd, to Sunday, July 5th. For tickets and more information about one of the best small roots and folk festivals in the UK, head to the official festival website here.
